DESIGN SOLUTION - Our response
was not to mimic the older buildings, but to combine
them into one child-friendly structure. The design makes
the most of the sloping land, so that the single-story
front elevation becomes a two-story structure moving
toward the back of the site. To further reduce the scale,
this elevation has two distinct halves in two colors,
red and white – reminiscent of New England barns
and houses. The front also incorporates elements found
in a child's drawing of a traditional school –
a clock tower at the main entry and a bell tower for
the kindergarten, both salvaged from the previous schools.
