SUSTAINABLE DESIGN - This
is an early example of “sustainable design”
by the firm long before the terminology became a watchword.
To meet the budget, the simple, economical design called
for the use of simple materials and details and extensive
natural lighting. Because the lower level is tucked
into the slope, it minimized cutting and filling on
the site. Many large oaks and maples were retained,
and fieldstone recovered from the site was used for
a garden fence surrounding the kindergarten play area.
The bell, clock and a weathervane topping a lamppost
were familiar elements recycled from the old schools.
