JURY COMMENTS - “In
spite of a tight budget, the architects created a marvelously
cheery, refreshing learning environment. The school
makes children feel at home by drawing on familiar New
England architectural traditions, while ingeniously
using inexpensive materials. The red and white colors,
abetted by an old school bell, a weathervane, stonewall,
and porch-like arcade, evoke images of schools and barns.
The skylit central spine is reminiscent of a covered
bridge. Additional skylights bring light to the classrooms,
reducing energy costs. The thoughtful, two-level design
takes full advantage of the wooded, sloping site, further
enriching the experience of the children of Middlebury.”
