| The new 28,000 sq ft academic building features a variety of “green” initiatives critical to the educational mission of the school. Several aspects of the design reduce energy consumption through: Light/Reflective (high albedo) roofing to reduce heat gains; A shared exterior wall with the existing gym saves on building perimeter reducing construction costs and energy loss; High efficiency HVAC systems using condensing boilers with low temp hot water and heat recovery reduces energy consumption; and occupancy / daylighting sensors and daylight dimming controls reduce the use of artificial lighting. Protection of natural resources is achieved through: Water conservation fixtures inside and non-invasive native plantings outside to reduce irrigation needs; and preservation of old-growth trees reduce heat gains and cooling requirements. The building is registered for LEED Silver Certification. Educational components include: state-of-the-art classrooms for biology, chemistry, marine studies, physics, and earth science with a green house, green roof and roof terrace for weather stations, telescopes and outdoor scientific work. Kingwood Oxford is an independent co-educational day school serving 600 students in grades 6-12 in West Hartford Connecticut. |
