Hartford, Connecticut (July 1999) -The Moylan School expansion
and renovation project (located in Hartford, Connecticut) was selected
from among 152 projects across the country by a jury of educators and
architects as exemplary of design solutions that "focus on the powerful
connection of environment to learning, community involvement, and environmental
conditions."
A central element of the design for this project was the re-orientation
of the school to a newly created courtyard. The courtyard serves as before,
after and during school hours recreation, education and informal gathering
space. Large portions of the spaces within the building have a direct
relationship to the new courtyard, placing greater importance on the sense
of community within the school.
The design for the courtyard was recently honored by the Boston Society
of Landscape Architects for outstanding design and featured in the September
issue of Landscape Architecture. While Tai Soo Kim conceived the courtyard,
the details of the courtyard were designed by landscape architect Mikyoung
Kim of Boston.
