Hartford - The award winning architectural firm of Tai Soo Kim
Partners has recently been selected by the 107-year-old Pomfret School,
an independent boarding school in northeastern Connecticut to create a
combined student center and athletic facility on its 500-acre campus. The
firm was selected based upon its initial concepts for the project and its
growing portfolio of work for independent schools in Connecticut, such
as the neighboring Rectory School, Miss Porter's School, and Wooster School.
The firm's initial concepts for the project
included both traditional above ground construction
and a scheme primarily below grade in order to maintain
the campus vistas. The below-grade scheme provides an
outdoor terrace and sitting area overlooking the rolling
hills in the area. The project will entail the adaptive
reuse of the existing Lewis Gymnasium (circa 1917),
renovations to its later additions, and new construction.
Programming and schematic design begin this summer.
The final designs will not be completed until the spring
of 2002.
The firm's work at the neighboring Rectory School began with developing
a campus master plan in 1994 and continued with the design of two new dormitories
completed in 1997, a new Arts Center completed this spring, and plans for
a new dining hall and studio arts barn. For the Wooster School in Danbury
Connecticut, the firm is overseeing construction of a gymnasium addition
and is developing plans for a new middle school on campus.
