Park Street Branch Library
Client: Hartford Public Library
Completion Date: 2019
The new two-story, two volume 13,000 sq. ft. building will become the largest branch library in the City of Hartford, providing much needed community resources to an already vibrant retail and residential neighborhood. The program includes a 150-seat community room, learning lab, meeting rooms, a café, exhibit space and designated adult, teen and children’s areas and a protected courtyard.

Consistent with the TSKP STUDIO’s interest in the sustainability of timber, the main library and community room portion will be built using exposed wood timber construction, which lends itself to a warm and inviting atmosphere. The exterior of the library is composed of two pieces: a lightly colored cast stone box serving as the entry volume with welcoming and revealing ‘cut-outs’, alongside a traditional brick façade with soaring windows. Defining the exterior into these two components reflects the architectural variety of the urban neighborhood.
